Migration & Diplomacy Atelier

Designing humane and inclusive migration futures through strategy, diplomacy, and research.

We are a think-and-do space exploring the intersection between migration, diplomacy, and strategy.

Executive Summary

Migration is one of the defining forces of the 21st century.

Migration shapes societies, economies, and international relations across the world. Yet, in much of the Global South, migration diplomacy remains underexplored, under-represented, and often disconnected from the realities faced by those on the move.

The Migration & Diplomacy Atelier (MDA) emerges as an East Africa-based initiative dedicated to bridging that gap, an ecosystem where migration policy, diplomacy, and lived experience converge to inform decisions that promote dignity, inclusion, and cooperation.

The Context

Rethinking migration and diplomacy in East Africa.

Migration has always defined East Africa, from nomadic traditions and historical trade routes to contemporary patterns of displacement, labour mobility, and diaspora engagement. Today, East Africa sits at the crossroads of major migratory and diplomatic currents.

However, discussions often remain fragmented. Humanitarian agencies focus on protection, ministries on control, and diplomats on state interests.

The Core Question

"What would it look like if migration became a diplomatic priority rather than a humanitarian afterthought?"

The Atelier Concept

A Workshop for Ideas

The word Atelier means "workshop" or "studio", a space of creation. MDA adopts this spirit to create a platform for collaborative thinking and action on migration diplomacy. We are not merely a research entity or an advocacy group; we are a strategic atelier, shaping narratives, ideas, and partnerships.

Strategy

Reimagining migration governance from the ground up.

Diplomacy

Bridging state, regional, and international agendas.

Research

Evidence-based policy that translates into action.

Approach & Model

MDA's model blends academic inquiry with practical diplomacy, building a prototype for migration governance that can be scaled across Africa and the Global South.

Policy Dialogues & Roundtables

Bringing together ambassadors, scholars, and policymakers to deliberate migration diplomacy issues.

Research & Publications

Producing evidence-based policy briefs, working papers, and regionally relevant thought pieces.

Leadership & Training

Hosting migration diplomacy academies and mentorship programs for emerging leaders.

Collaborative Partnerships

Working with universities, embassies, and multilateral bodies to co-develop projects and shared agendas.

Call to Partnership
